# Editing Character

> Refine character cards, definitions, models, responses, and voice.

After creating a character, you can fine-tune their settings at any time. Changes you make will apply to all new conversations created with that character.

## Character Card

The character card is the core definition of your character. It includes the main profile fields like description, first message, tags, and the advanced definition field that shapes how the AI behaves.

  If you want the biggest behavioral change, edit the character card first. New conversations will use the updated card
  immediately.

## OOC (Out of Character) & Definition

**OOC** means **out of character**. It is a simple way to add direct guidance for how the model should behave, outside the character's normal in-world voice. Open **Edit Character**, expand **Character Definition**, and add those instructions at the end of the definition when you want more control.

* Use OOC to steer tone, pacing, formatting, scene rules, and response style more directly
* It is useful when you want behavior changes that the short description cannot enforce reliably
* Append clear instructions at the end of the definition so they act like an advanced control layer
* Keep the most important instructions specific and avoid contradictory rules
* Template variables like **{{char}}** and **{{user}}** also work there

  OOC guidance is good for advanced tuning. It helps when you want the character to follow stronger rules around style,
  explicitness, structure, or how scenes should progress.

  Definition edits are best tested in a new conversation. Existing chats already contain older context, so they may not
  reflect the change as cleanly.
